Hmmm. I always thought it was due to mice hopping through thick snow, and each "footprint" is where the mouse lands. Of course the prints were said to disappear in the middle of fields, which could be the result of the meeses attracting the attention of a hungry owl.

the footprints in the snow has also been reported in the case of springheeled jack from the victorian era.
