Claydon House
The spirit of Sir Edmund Verney, standard bearer to Charles I, is said to appear at the house in times of national crisis.
Sir Edmund was killed at the battle of Edgehill, and is reputed to have sworn that no man would take the standard that he bore without cutting his hand from his body. His severed hand still clutching the bloody standard was found on the battlefield (also haunted) when the fighting was over.
The house is also reputed to be haunted by phantom footsteps which emerge from the site of a priest hole.
Directions: To the South of Middle Claydon, the house is owned by the National Trust.
