Wight Beaches
The impressive swathe of scenic sands that form the Back of the Wight Beaches, were the scene of much of the smuggling that formed an additional revenue for many islanders during the 17th 18th and early 19th century.
There were also many wrecks along this part of the coast, and an unfortunate seaman from one of these disasters is said to walk out of the sea, clad in a black sailors jacket and cap. Phantom footsteps have also been reported, with no visible presence to account for them.
Directions: The beaches stretch along the southern coast of the island from St Catherine’s Westwards.
