Clegyr Boia

This rocky hilltop was occupied during the Neolithic period around 3800BC, when there were a number of rectangular houses on the summit. During the Iron Age the hill was fortified and served as a hillfort. A rampart, which can still be seen today, was completed around the hill with an entrance towards the Southwest.

According to Welsh legend the hillfort was the home of a 6th century pirate of Irish origin called Boia, after whom the hillfort is named. His fortification was said to have been destroyed by heavenly fire after Boia’s wife sacrificed their daughter Dunawd to the old pagan gods. Boia was killed by another pirate called Lisci on the same night. Whether the legend holds any historical clues is not known.
