Mohan Phantom Army

On 25 February 1858 a phantom army was seen marching through the sky above Mohan by some British people there. The army was described as wearing Hindu costumes. This apparition experience occurred during The Indian Rebellion of 1857 also known as the Sepoy Mutiny, Indian Mutiny and India’s First War of Independence which ended on 20 June 1858 when Gwalior fell. Sparked by the introduction of the 1853 Pattern Enfield Rifle which required the sepoys to bite the cartridges (which were supposed to have been greased in either pork fat or beef fat) open. Muslims could not bite into lard as it is seen as being unclean by their faith and Hindu’s could not bite into tallow. It changed the face of Indian politics with the dissolution of the East India Company in 1858 and with the British Government taking responsibility via the India Office.
