Bryn-y-Castell

Taking the B4391 towards Bala from Llan Ffestiniog for just over a mile, you pass close to an Iron Age hillfort situated in rough moorland known as Bryn-y-Castell. The site was excavated by students from Plas Tan-y-Bwlch (Maentwrog) between 1979 and 1985, and it was found to be an important site for iron production until the arrival of the Romans in North Wales when it was abandoned. During the excavations, the rampart and some buildings were partially reconstructed, which makes the site worth visiting since you can get a good idea of how it would have once looked. There are the remains of what looks like a spiral shaped structure which was thought to be the smithy. After the Roman occupation had ended, iron working continued once more at the site, outside the main structure, in a small external building until sometime in the 3rd Century.

Since this site is in the vicinity of Llyn Morwynion, could it be the remains of the court that Blodeuwedd and her maidens were making for, from Mur-y-Castell, to flee from Gwydion in Math Son of Mathanwy of the Mabinogion?
