    My Experience
Ok, I’ve had a few strange experiences over the years, but luckily I have been able to explain many of them upon closer examination.  I’ll get a few more up later, but for now, refer to the Muncaster article for one of my most perplexing ones.

The Muncaster tale is certainly an in interesting one, especially having the two seperate witnesses. Muncaster itself is rather a curious place, everytime I’ve past it, it’s been shrouded in mist. And that painting of Tom – the eyes were so creepy.

And isn’t there some glass bowl or something with a story behind it?

There is also a Luck associated with nearby Workington Hall.

    Oddity
I’ve seen and heard a lot of odd things, but I must admit seeing a 65 pound cast iron fireplace insert stand up and walk on it’s own in front of other witnesses (with none of them even close to it) for about 10 feet is one of the stranger.

I’ve had some experiences, but I’m not sure how I’d react if I saw something as bl;atant as that. Normally you hear and see things, just out of ear/eyeshot, so you can be rational and put it down to mice or something and stay sane. But if I saw something big and heavy move, it would be time to make to the exits.

    The Nun
I was 15yr old at the time this incident occured (in my 40s now). see what you think?
My friend Anna and i were walking home from school, up the new road  as we all called it, The road was newly built a year or two  previous,  for a new housing estate, they were building at that time,.  Near to where the road and the new houses were, about half a mile across the mountain side, there is a lake, and the locals call it the Cardi pond, there is a wide stoney path leading off the road to it!!, (been there years) So we were talking away, when, i happened to look across the road, and saw a woman, around 5ft tall and wearing what i saw was a nuns outfit, i watched as she walked toward the pond then she disappeared, i turned to my friend and asked ”did you see that”  ”no” she said, she just laughed and said ” don’t be daft you must have been seeing things”,. Thirty three years on, i made a new friend, Ann, who is sixty four, i related my experience to her, and she said ” her friend in the late sixties, had been a nun and she  had commited suicide in the pond,. Also my daughter’s friend’s father told his daughter, back about five, six years ago, he and a few of his workmates were coming home along the side of the mountain road by the pond, and he said ”he saw and heard her because she called his name” two of his colleagues he said also witnessed the nun. I’ve related an experience which happened under my very nose (though I was sound asleep and didn’t notice a thing) in the topic "Can animals detect ghosts?".
My other experiences are not that great: I saw a UFO 26 years ago, very disturbing happening that still haunts me, and fifteen or so years ago I had a curious experience, though I would be cautious of defining it as "paranormal". Here it goes.
I opened a drawer where I kept my music records to get a cassette tape (I always keep them in alphabetic order) and there was a an empty slot where a folk record was supposed to be. I searched high and low thinking that I may have accidentally misplaced it but to not avail. After a couple of hours I had given up hope, but opened the drawer nonetheless and the tape was back at its place. I was home alone the whole time and I have wondered ever since which bizzare trick my senses played on me.

I really only have one. It was very weird.

When I was about twenty (i.e. about eighteen years ago) I was going to a country party in northern New South Wales with some friends, one main friend and some people I had just met. We all climbed out the back of a truck and walked down this dirt road towards the house the party was at.

I got talking to a guy – about 30 years old, brown woollen jumper, black dreadlocks, crooked teeth – who was talking back to me as we passed under some shady trees. I can’t remember what the conversation was about but I recall I was quite interested and he seemed like a good guy.

Anyway, then when we got out of the shady patch, I realised that the person who was there with me was actually a girl in her twenties, much shorther, brown hair, nothing like the guy I’d been taking with.

"Where did that guy go?" I said, looking around. I still recall that exact moment, the feeling of shock and confusion.

    "Who?" she said.

"The guy…he was just here. Black dreadlocks? Funny teeth?"

"Sorry mate. I have no idea who you are talking about."

Anyway the girl also had no clue about what we had been talking about while we’d been walking along. It was either that I imagined both the guy and the conversation, or like he was just suddenly replaced by a different person, who had no memory of talking with me about anything.

I searched the party and found no trace of the guy with the black hair. My main friend did not even recall seing him on the truck and thought I must have just made him up.

    I’ve had two experiences

I’ve had two experiences that could be considered hauntings.

I’m a veterinarian and was working in a nearby town when this occured.  The building was a brand new metal sided one right by this ditch that nearly always had water running in it.  On more than one occassion I would catch what would seem to be a loose animal in the building out of the corner of my eye.  The one time I swear I thought it was one of the black cats that was there at the time.  Each time after checking the kennels there would be no loose animals.  My sister, who worked for me during the summers, also had very similar experiences.

While in college there was another incident but it was entirely different.  In fact it would be closer to a poltergeist type experience.  One of my close friends while in high school and college had told me about odd things that would happen in his house.  The weirdest one related to me was that a pool table supposedly floated up in the air and towards another aquaintance.  I never heard it directly from the person it occured to so it may have been exaggarated.  Anyway, there were three of us at my friend’s house one night.  The house had a finished basement with a doorway right off of the den.  The stereo down there suddenly came on while no one was down in the room.  Next from the upstairs there was a sound like a drawer full of silverware being shaken from one of the bedrooms.  We all went upstairs and nothing was disturbed.  Although I do not think so I do have to admit these two occurences could have been set up.  The third could not have been.  There was a toy setting down on a table.  It was one of those that have a spring and suction cup that you push down and the toy pops back up.  I know for a fact that the toy was not pushed down when the three of us went up the stairs and no one would have been able to stop and push the toy down.  When we came back down the stairs the toy was pushed down and ready to pop up.

  13. Ian Topham says:

    I had a similar experience
I had a similar experience with strange noises from upstairs whilst I was in my late teens.  I was having an argument with my brothers and tempers were high.  It was probably over who turn it wash to do the washing up or make a cup of tea (lol).  Our shouting stopped when there was a crash from upstairs, follewed by a second.  The noise was from the bathroom and no-one was upstairs, not even our dogs.  There was another crash, and and a forth.  The three of us that were present startedto creep upstairs.  There was another crash before we got to the bathroom.  Inside we found each item from the bathroom shelf had been knocked down into the bath.  Large bottles of shampo,  deoderant, soaps etc, all lying in the bath.  The shelf was about three foot or more above the bath and about eight inches deep.  These items obvious were not positioned on the edge of the shelf so that they might have become unbalanced.  No animal was notices and the shelf was inaccessible to any rodents (not that we ever had any).

It was unusual, but was it paranormal? No of us were in a position to see any of the items move on their own and I assume there must be an explanation.

    I have always been
I have always been interested in the paranormal, and am very open minded but I don’t tend to believe everything paranormal I hear about. However, there have been a few incidents in my life which I cannot explain.

My first experience happened when I was only ten(I’m now in my twenties) and is quite hazy but i will try my best to describe it. I was walking along a local footpath, known as the wagon road, with one of my friends when we heard footsteps behind us and when we turned round we saw a young boy with red hair. My friend started to ask him his name a few times but he said nothing, so we kept walking. when we turned round again he was gone and there was nowhere he could have gone that we could think of. We thought it was weird but being kids didn’t think much of it, but, looking back a few years later, i remember he didn’t seem to fit, he wore clothes none of my friends wore and I don’t know how to explain it but I get a creepy feeling when I think about it. Maybe it’s just my imagination playing tricks on me though!

My second experience happened at my house, i will keep this one brief. Basically I was in my bedroom which is next to the bathroom and I was living alone at the time so no one else was in the house. I had my door open and saw a sock come flying out ogf the bathroom and land on the floor. Needless to say I ran down the stairs and slept on the sofa that night. I have no idea what caused this and it still puzzles me.

My final experience happened when I was in sixth form at school. I live very close to Muncaster Castle and we went on a school trip there one day. I was in the tapestry room and I am certain I heard a voice whisper in my ear but I could not understand what was said but I did catch trhe word ‘NO’

As I said, I’m quite skeptical, but have an open mind, and these three events have really puzzled me. maybe I just have an overactive imaginaion!

The flying sock really does continue to puzzle me. I don’t know what could have caused it as I stupidly didn’t check the bathroom out until the next day.

  17. Daniel Parkinson says:

I have had a few experiences
I have had a few experiences as I am sure a lot of people have, one that I am still curious about happened when I was about 20, there were other witnesses and I am sure there is a reasonable explanation, here it is:

I was at Uni in Hertfordshire and had arranged a lift home with a girl (lets call her Louise) from our course . We were also dropping off someone else from the course in Cornwall (a huge detour as we were going back to Manchester, but anyway it was a good excuse to sightsee). The guy (lets call him Mark) on the course lived on a large farm on the border of Cornwall and Devon. The river Tamar (which forms the border) ran close to their farm near a wooded valley and an Iron Age Hillfort. After a couple of beers in Launceston we went back to the farm and, as we were staying overnight, grabbed a torch and Mark gave us a midnight tour of the land around the farm.

We went to see a huge Fir tree that grew in the valley, and I left them and went to the top the hill fort (it wasn’t a particularly big one) and was looking about in the ditch of the earthwork when I heard what I would describe as the sound of a drum: a dull sound like an animal skin drum rather than a modern snare (I had friends that played the Boran so had an idea what that sound would make.) I thought this was a bit odd but it didn’t spook me out as I thought there was probably an explanation. This ’drum’ sounded again and I went down to join my friends who were now walking up the hill. They had heard it too and Mark had never heard anything similar while growing up at the farm, and could not offer any explanation. They were a bit spooked ,especially the Louise who had not had any dutch courage at the pub as she was driving. We were halfway down when it sounded again a bit closer, and then again. Finally it sounded again more intense as a definite drum beat coming up the hill through the darkness heading for our location getting louder and louder.

I was up for seeing what it was but my companion’s ar**s were knitting socks, and had started to break into a run in the other direction. Panic is infectious and I soon joined them in a mad dash back to the farm house. The next day my friend’s father had no explanation either even though he had lived on the farm for many years. I wondered if there was some animal that could have made a similar sound but was quite familiar with most British animals as were my colleagues. I suppose it could have been some idiots with animal skin drums, maybe dressed as Orcs for added effect đŸ™‚ I am sure there is a logical explanation but I am still stumped.

A funny thing happened as we approached the farmhouse: we disturbed a roust of birds in a tree who all took flight at once and scared the living S***e out of everybody .

    My experience
About 12 months ago the back of my workshop flooded with water during a heavy downpour and it kept raining for several days. The telephone had fallen off the hook as it is vertically mounted on the wall at eye level. I placed it back on its hook and mopped up the mess and dried it out and plugged a hole where I thought the water had come in. This particular area is where I have my office desk and computer in my upholstery workshop. That afternoon I went to use the house phone but found it to be dead so I checked all other phones to see if any were left open or off their hooks (or mounts) The house phones were all ok so I went to check the workshop (20metres from the house)  Sure enough it was off the hook and the floor was wet again. Cleaned up the water put the phone back on its hook only to find it would happen again. This time I traced the flooding to a telephone junction box  mounted about 1 foot off the floor on a stud and the telephone is mounted about 5 feet from the floor(about eye level). The water was weeping from the back of the junction box and running down the stud.  What was happening was the plastic 1 inch  piping was filling up with water and finding its way to the junction box. The question remains why did the phone fall off the hook 3 times each time the flooding occured. It has never done that and hasn’t since. When I couldn’t find the leak it was as if something was trying to communicate to me and tell me it was the phone line piping. I  fixed the problem by drilling a hole in the pipe outside the wall.
I have my own answers to all this but they are too complex to put into words. My story would be a little bit like the movie called Dragonfly with Kevin Costner. Doesn’t matter how intelligent you are once you start to explain things of an unknown nature people start to assume you are nuts or you have flipped your lid. I believe there are parallels that we don’t fully understand yet but as we evolve we will begin to understand a lot more. Just look how far we have come with technology yet the human brain is only working at a fraction of what it can do. I will leave you with this closing line. I don’t believe we walk this planet alone and we only see dimly as like looking into a mirror. Closed minded people don’t want to see any further. I am very open minded and would love to know what it’s all about and how the chemistry works but then it wouldn’t work would it I suppose. Check out this page and read it carefully. http://www.thegreatillusion.com/

    Co-incidence?
I’ve never experienced anything ghostly myself, but I do remember my sister aged about 10(I was about 5)  waking up one night out of the blue, screaming. Nightmares weren’t common in our house and anyway this was a full on cold scream which bought basically everyone in the house running. Anyway, she was fine asides from being incredibly distressed, crying and hysterical, repeating, "Roly died". For clarification, Roly was our pony; a chestnut gelding with a white nose and much beloved. My sister would honestly have lived in his stable had she been allowed, she adored him that much. Anyway, my mother eventually calmed her down and convinced her it was just a dream and the incident wasn’t mentioned again. My sister would never talk about it, so I don’t know what the dream was in detail, and anyway i was too young to think to ask.

The horrible part cropped up a couple of weeks later at a scheduled Pony club meet. My sister was supposed to be in a class with two girls she knew, only one didn’t turn up. Not being a close freind of ours, my mother had to ask why they weren’t there. It transpired that the girl had not too long ago (i’m not sure of the exact time scale) been involved in an accident where a landrover had sped around a corner on a lane and collided with her on her horse. Her chestnut gelding with a white nose. The girl suffered a badly broken leg, and i think the driver died on impact. The horse had to be put down.

So that’s about it. Not a ghost, but… a premonition?

(Roly, for the record, lived to a ripe old age)

    Muncaster Castle
As I was born in south Cumbria, I’ve known about Muncaster Castle for a long time since I have been past it in the car multiple times on day trips to the lakes. About three years ago, I visited Muncaster Castle and did the tour with the handset devices. Upon entering the Tapestry Room, I felt very uneasy, despite there being quite a number of other people in the room. I listened to the information on the handset and left the room pretty sharpish! Before then, I didn’t know Muncaster Castle was supposed to be haunted.

    Re: Your Experiences
7 years ago I started University which meant moving house and town (from Northampton to Salford, Greater Manchester). Almost as soon as we moved in odd things started happening. I was studying Graphic Design which involved me being very creative and open minded.

I’ve never experienced things that can’t be explained until moving here. I’ve always been open-minded when it came to things like this but had never had any first hand experiences. People said to me maybe I was imagining things but I know that’s SO not true. I was wide awake when many of these things happened. They were VERY real. I wasn’t ill or anything when I heard and felt the things I’m about to write about and many other people, visitors and housemates, heard things too. Yet, still, when I mention them I am usually laughed at or given odd looks.

The main thing that would happen would be that I’d wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of someone walking up and down the stairs and outside my bedroom. The stairs here go up through the middle of our house so there could be no confusion with people walking up the stairs next door. The stairs are sandwiched between my bedroom and the back bedroom. Each time the noises would carry on as I listened and I would be wide awake, listening, convinced someone had broken in. I could never go back to sleep with the possibility that someone was trying to burgle the house so I would equip myself with a knife and a pillow (to protect myself if they had a knife!) Each time there would be no one there.

I experienced this many times and so did my 2 housemates but to a lesser extent. There was a period of about 2 weeks where this would be a nightly occurence.

Now, the most compelling example of hearing someone walking the stairs was this. 3 of us live here and this one night 2 of us, me being one of them, wasn’t here. This left one person in the house. He went out on this night and bumped into a mate who ended up coming back to our house and sleeping on my housemates floor. This person was completely unaware of anything that had gone on before in the house. At about 7am he woke my housemate to tell him that one of ‘his housemates’ had come back and he could hear someone walking around outside the door and up and down the stairs, we weren’t. There was no one else in the house. His mate had spent ONE night here and had heard what we all had been hearing! My housemate then said something along the lines of "Oh we hear it all the time, there’s never anyone there, we think it could be a ghost!". His mate left pretty quickly and never came back.

These occurences carried on and climaxed when the following happened to me one night. I had heard the usual walking around outside, I was wide awake and I needed the loo before I could even try going back to sleep. I had to go and check to see if anyone was there in order to get to the bathroom without being attacked! (Despite there never being anyone there it always sounded SO real that I would think "Oh this time someone HAS broken in!") I checked, no one there, went bathroom and then settled down to try and get back to sleep. I’d been lying there for about 5 minutes when all of a sudden I could hear what sounded like 3 little girls "la-la-la-ing" a tune. There were no words, just la’s. They repeated this little tune for 3 lines. After this I could hear 3 separate taps. It was like each of the little girls had a key and were repeatedly tapping on a wall. Now, the scariest thing about this wasn’t the fact that I was hearing little girls singing in my room. The scariest thing about this was that where my ears were telling me these sounds were coming from, there was nothing there for the sound to emanate from. I was looking from where the sound was coming from yet all that was there was air. It was in the middle of my room.

People have said to me "Maybe they were outside". 3 little girls singing in the street at 3-4 am? I doubt that. Besides I know what noises from outside sound like. These weren’t from outside. My ears would make it obvious if these noises where from outside. I have my radio on as I type this and if I shut my eyes it is OBVIOUS whereabouts in the room the sound is coming from. Try shutting your eyes and have someone clap in the room. It’s easy to pin-point where abouts they are.

It was freaky as hell and I was literally frozen in terror throughout this occurence. For the duration I couldn’t move and I don’t even remember breathing. I WAS wide awake and for 15 minutes after I layed there trying to make some sense of what had just happened. I couldn’t.

Other things to have happened include:

A friend was staying and woke up to feel someones hand over his mouth and whispering in his ear. No one there. This was just after we moved in and was one of the first things to happen. Luckily this has only happened once!

A friend had come over for the weekend and after arriving had a nap in my room after his long train journey. I was at the top of the stairs with a book in my hand called ‘Life After Death’. My friend had had his nap and came out the door and asked me what the book was. I showed him and he said "So has that got anything to do with the baby I heard crying in your room?" I said "What?" and he explained he had heard a baby crying in my room and it hadn’t sounded like it was coming from next door or anywhere else other than in my room. Again, he had no knowledge of anything that had gone on before here.

I was laying on the sofa in the front room alone in the house and felt a very distinct tap on the top of my head. I lay there for a while and could feel my displaced hair moving back and could still feel where I had been tapped for about 5 minutes after.

This is quite odd but has been heard by lots of people. In the night or early morning you can hear someone typing on my computer keyboard. Many times I’ve assumed someone has got up early and is bored and has gone onto the net for something to do. No one ever has. It’s very prolonged and clear and just sounds like someone is using the computer. It’s not even ON!!

The last thing we experienced was a revolting smell at the top of the stairs. It smelt awful, like when a bag of potatoes go off and they start to liquify in the bag. A horrible rotting smell. This smell moved. It was always somewhere at the top of the stairs but if you moved a step to the right or left of the smell you wouldn’t be able to smell it. Sometimes it would be near the bathroom, sometimes just inside someones bedroom doorway. It was SO strong as to make you feel ill. We looked everywhere for a source but to no avail. We sniffed the carpets. We shampooed the carpets. Nothing. It still came back. We looked in the attic to see if a bird or something had got in and had died. Nothing. The smell would come and go at random. It would disappear in seconds then a few days later would be back. Again, step either side and it would be undetectable.

Then it all stopped when I got ill. After my course at Univeristy finished I really suddenly started to experience devastating panic attacks. 24 hours a day! These developed in the space of about 2 days, from being completely normal to me being a complete nervous wreck. I had to admit myself to Accident & Emergency at one point to find out what was happening to me and it turned in to severe depression. It was at this point almost everything that had been happening stopped. Could this be linked? When I got ill I was almost a vegetable for at least 6 months. I couldn’t do anything and was in a constant state of dread. Could it be maybe that my mind closed up thus not allowing whatever was in house to use my energy to manifest in it’s various ways? It’s always puzzled me as to why the odd things stopped when I got ill. Can spirits be active for a period then go into ‘hibernation’? I’m not saying any spirits caused my illness but am just wondering if the fact that I was ill stopped them from making themselves known.

When I got better and got back to work, that’s when I started to experience stuff EVERYWHERE. Now I have a grip on it all and most of it isn’t scary. More to come…

I’m still not sure to this day what my experience was or could be classed as. I was walking home from work one evening, it must have been in the winter as I remember that it was after dark. I was just about 6 doors away from my home when i felt, what can only be discribed as a black entity come right up behind me. I felt that it grew and was about to come down and encase me in it. I spun round thinking maybe I was about to be attacked or something but there was nothing there and the feeling immediately disappeared. I hurried home fairly quickly after that I can tell you. I have never encountered that sensation ever again but I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t turned around!

Being a career occultist would rather naturally draw one to experience things, of course, but you actually get a lot less psychic phenomena and spirits appearing to human sight than you might expect, in practice.

To go right back and start where it started, my bedroom where I grew up was haunted.
I’d often get the bed kicked at night, and once something just put it into my head that a string on my guitar, right across the room and untouched, would break, just before it loudly did.
There were a few other things, hag/succubus attacks, strongly felt malevolent prescences, etc.
By my early twenties I’d leaned a lot of Craft, though, and then I was able to exorcise the house. Nothing has happened there since, my family are still there but they no longer suffer from the spirit activity anymore.

I could go on with more things since but I’m just rushing through now, I’ll come back again sometime.

    Re: Your Experiences
I’ve had that many experiences over the years I think that I’d need to write an actual bok to tell you about them all. My first ever experience was when I was about four and I’ve found that as I’ve got older, I’m now 32, I still experience things and even have experienced new things and in a way feel that I have grown into this.

I have seen things, heard things, felt things, dreamt of dead people and dreamt of things that then happened. I am also very, very good at knowing things, ie I meet someone for the first time ever but I know straight away what type of person they are or I will avoid doing something as I know something is going to happen. Basically I just go with my instincts.

I think that I’m just very tuned into my feelings, my mind, my surroundings and have a connection to the ‘other world’ or the supernatural (call it whatever you want.)

Edited: Sorry, I don’t want my experience up anymore.
