Jack Hallam in Ghosts of the North mentions that a large headless hound terrified the countryside between Milnthorpe and Beetham.

Re: Milnthorpe Black Dog, Cumbria
This is correct. The roads and lanes around Beetham were haunted by a “boggle” or bogey in the form of a big black dog.. A black dog is said to walk between Beetham and Milnthorpe each night at 12 o clock and it is headless. Apparently it also had blazing eyes and was considered evil.

Headless with blazing eyes? I dare not ask where the eyes are blazing from.
Re: Milnthorpe Black Dog, Cumbria
I thought that but that’s what I read!!!
Re: Milnthorpe Black Dog, Cumbria
Very odd… the same tautological "headless with blazing eyes" description is used for the Kidsgrove Boggart in North Staffs. If memory serves, this description dates to an 18th century diarist.
