Poulnabrone Dolmen

The Poulnabrone Dolmen is a portal tomb dating back to Neolithic times (2500BC). The thin capstone is about 12’ in length and is supported 6’ from the ground by two portal stones.

Excavations at the site in 1985 found the remains of 16-22 adults, 6 children. Goods found with the bodies included quartz crystals, a polished stone axe, arrowheads, scrapers and a bone pin. The body of a baby was also found which is believed to have been buried around 1700BC.  There have also been suggestions that this may have also been an important ritual site during Celtic times.

The name Poulnabrone (Poll na mBron) means ‘hole of sorrows’
