The Millenium Devizes White Horse
In 1998, unaware of the now lost 1845 Devizes White Horse (aka Snobs Horse), Sarah Padwick who was new to the area wrote into the local newspaper suggesting that to celebrate the Millenium, a hill figure should be cut on Roundway Down.
Also in 1998 there was an attempt to re-cut Snobs Horse which was prevented as its location is now a listed site of scientific interest. Land on Roundway Hill was then offered as an alternative site for a white horse by Chris Coombe, a tenant farmer.
A design created in 1954 by Devizes Grammar school 6th form student Peter Greed was chosen and the new Devizes White Horse was created in September 1999. It should be noted though that the design was reversed and the Devizes horse faces right, unlike the other white horses that can be found throughout Wiltshire. It is one of only four white horses in Britain to face right.
