On 24 June 1750, Anne Blakemore of Walberswick died. Her body was found on the Walks a mile west of Blythburgh and negro drummer named Tobias (Toby) Gill from the 4th Dragoons (Lieutenant General Sir Robert Rich’s Regiment of Dragoons) was accused of her murder. The Dragoons had been based in that area to combat smuggling and Toby had been drunk near where Anne’s body was discovered.

In September 1986 an experience on Four Ashes Lane, led to speculation that a large Green Man haunted Cryers Hill. The following article entitled ‘Phantom of the Forest’ was published in the South Bucks Star on 26 September 1986 and concerned Mark Nursey’s experience which took place six days earlier.

The ghost story of The Cat Inn concerns an old tramp, Billy Pitt, who collapsed in the snow one bitter cold night in mid-winter. The howling of Billy’s dog, Jim, brought a group of drunks out of the inn to see what was going on. They dragged Billy into the pub and revived him by the fire.

Drakelow in Worcestershire derives its name from a mythological creature – the dragon. The word for dragon in Germanic mythology and its descendants is worm (Old English: wyrm, Old High German: wurm, Old Norse: ormr), meaning snake or serpent. In Old English wyrm means "serpent", draca means "dragon" (Skeat).

Oldnall Road, a seemingly unremarkable two-mile rural stretch of B-road between the towns of Halesowen and Stourbridge in the West Midlands, hit the international headlines a few months ago (1) following reports of a series of sightings of an apparition. Reports of ‘road ghosts’ are nothing unusual, they form an important part of ‘ghost lore’ throughout the world (2).
