St Swithin’s day
15 July – The Bishop of Winchester or St Swithin died in AD 862. In legend the monks could not remove his body for 40 days and 40 nights because of torrential rain. It has now become folklore that if it rains on Saint Swithin’s bridge (Winchester) on 15th July, it will rain for 40 days and 40 nights.
Re: St Swithin’s day
It is a bit more involved than that, legend goes he was buried at westminster against his wishes and it rained for 40 days and nights. folk became scarred because they thought they had upset him and they decidedhe should be moved to the burial place of his choice-then it stopped raining
Re: St Swithin’s day
Perhaps we should move him back to Westminster given the drought our gardens are suffering this year?
Some much needed rain wouldn’t go amiss.
