St Peter’s Church, Stanion
A two meter long whale bone inside this 13th century church has been linked to a legend of a huge cow that was big enough to feed the whole village in times of need.
This is a common legend that can also be found connected to the Callanish Stone Circle in the Outer Hebrides and Mitchell’s Fold in Shropshire. As with each of these legends the cow dies of exhaustion when a witch tries to milk it with a sieve. The whale bone is supposed to be a rib from their magical cow and the rest of its remains are, according to folklore, buried at Cow Common.
