A pit in a farmer’s field at Springhead called ‘Th’ Pob Hole’ was thought to be a dark place where a local witch named Nan o’ Pob’s committed suicide. Her ghost is said to have terrorised the children of Lees and Hey for three generations afterwards.
At the moment the exact location of Th’ Pob Hole (if it actually existed ) is unknown.

I have lived in Lees and Springhead and have never heard of this! Do you have any more info? What is your source?
Hi Rebecca, same here only I lived in Lees and Waterhead. Found a reference to it in the Oldham Historical Research Group website. I suspect the story will at least come from the 19th century but probably earlier. I would love to hear more about it if anyone is familiar with it.
