‘Giant’ Old Hag moving furniture
Hey All,
Hey All,
Anyone heard any folklore relating to mythical creatures/spirits etc that take the form of a "giant" old woman (by giant we can safely say much larger than a normal old woman) that may live in houses, Wear oversized boots and while more active at night (likes to move things around at night and laugh) also moves by day but is usually covered (in a sheet etc), Oh and also might like to sit in wicker chairs?
Daft question I’m sure but still… Anyone anything similar?
Ta.

Re: ‘Giant’ Old Hag moving furniture
Hello Thryth and welcome to the website. With it being Christmas and having family around for lunch, I looked at your post and thought…………hang on, I have a few of those in my house:). It does not sound immediately familiar but I will see if I can find anything relating to it.
Re: ‘Giant’ Old Hag moving furniture
Afraid I can’t think of anything. Only giant hags I know of are the Cailleach Bhuer and things like that. Household spirits are usually pretty diminutive, like brownies.
Re: ‘Giant’ Old Hag moving furniture
From what little I have read I would agree with Urisk in saying household fairies tend to be small.

Don’t domovoi change size?

Re: ‘Giant’ Old Hag moving furniture
I think Domovoi are still considered to be small and are usually male. I’ll have to check about changing size.
Re: ‘Giant’ Old Hag moving furniture
Stretching it a bit to say ‘giant’ but the Grugach (Firesitter rather than elfin variety)could be considered both sturdily built and hag-like I suppose. They are said to beperpetually cold despite being very hairy and whilst not specifically House Spirits, they sought invitations to farm-households to sit by the hearth. If this was granted then they would in turn protect the livestock, but it was also claimed they would be extremely tempted to abduct young boys.
Not exactly what you described Tyrth, but closest I could think of, off the top of my head. Will give some more thought.

I am pretty sure the Japanese have something very similar… will check my literature and be back later.

Re: ‘Giant’ Old Hag moving furniture
Giant women? I am afraid I have come across nothing like that. I have read about real giants, witches, demons, and what not. But this is something new to me.
Re: ‘Giant’ Old Hag moving furniture
I’ve been thinking about this and whilst it does seem weirdly familiar, I still cannot specifically think of a tale or entity that fits the description specifically. Mauro could be right in the Japanese lore theory, or it could be from a Scandinavian or Scottish isles tale of a Kunal-Trow, Troll-Wife or Ogress.

Re: ‘Giant’ Old Hag moving furniture
I’m thinking the same thing, but I could swear it was Russian or eastern Scandinavian. Or I’ve just lost my mind. One of the above.

Re: ‘Giant’ Old Hag moving furniture
hmmm this is interesting, giants used to feature alot in ancient stories. they were mainly male though. i am not sure but i think i may have read about something a bit like this in the past. wracking my brain trying to think what it was. i will do my best to have a good look round any of the sites i usually go to and see if i can find anything. if i do i will let you know.
Re: ‘Giant’ Old Hag moving furniture
don’t you mean the hag of the house tale old wives told
it talks of boggarts changing shape into old hags and moving houses furniture and hiding precious objects but they only did this when someone from an irish or celtic family are going to die!
