Bedford Hospital
Officially opening in August 1803, Bedford Hospital was built with £8000 bequeathed in the will of Samuel Whitbread (Died 1796). The hospital has of course grown extensively over the last 200 years and now houses 440 beds and caters for a population of about 270,000. According to the following extract taken from an article by Andrew Watt entitled ‘15 ghost sightings in Bedford’ (Bedfordshire on Sunday – 10 March 2015), Bedford Hospital may be haunted. ‘At Bedford Hospital in 1972, two nurses watched an attractive girl in a long dress and coat glide into a toilet on the south wing of the hospital. When they followed, they discovered the room was empty. Another sighting in 1990 was witnessed by three members of staff who reported witnessing a lady in a long dress walk through the wall of a store room. The Shand Ward at the hospital is also said to be haunted, this time by the sound of shuffling footsteps.’
