Dartford Crossing
The Dartford Crossing which consists of two tunnels and a bridge takes the A282 over the River Thames as part of London’s M25 orbital ring road linking Dartford with Thurrock. The first tunnel opened in 1963, the second in 1980 and the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge in 1991. I am not sure what evidence supports the possibility of Dick Turpin (Born 1705 – Died 7 April 1739) haunting the Crossing, but it was referred to by Anna Dubuis in an article entitled ‘The ghosts and legends of north Kent’ which appeared in the Gravesend Reporter on Wednesday 31 October 2012.
Note: In June 2012, Havering Councillor Clarence Barrett wanted the name of the crossing changed to ‘Dick Turpin Way’ after the Department of Transport decided to increase the toll charges for using the crossing. Modern day ‘Highway Robbery’?
