Fort Belan
Fort Belan is a Grade I listed building dating from 1775 and was built by Member of Parliament, Sir Thomas Wynn, 1st Baron Newborough (born 1736 – died 12 October 1807), as a defence for the Menai Strait against possible naval aggression during the American War of Independence. The threat not being realised, the Wynn family used it as a private dwelling from the 1820’s (which was of course after the Napoleonic War). These days the fort offers self catering accommodation making it an interesting location for a unique break.
In a 2001 article in The Telegraph, Christopher Middleton mentions that one of the corridors is said to be haunted by a phantom nursemaid.
