Longleat House

Longleat House is the home of the Thynne family and was built on the site of an old priory. The house like many of the old family stately homes has a multitude of ghost stories.

A corridor within the house is thought to be haunted by a Green Lady and is known as the Green Lady’s Walk. She has been identified as Lady Louisa Carteret. She was married to the second Viscount of Weymouth, who is said to have killed her lover and buried his body in the cellar. A body thought to be his was found under the cellar during the early 1900’s. Lady Louisa died during childbirth in 1736.

The library is said to be haunted by Bishop Ken and is named after him, he stayed in the house during the persecutions of the Catholics and may have been a virtual home prisoner. The Red Library is said to be haunted by a male presence described as friendly who has never been seen.

The house is also said to be haunted by the apparition of a cavalier and by the ghost of Cardinal Woolsey.
