Marriott Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club
The Dalmahoy Hotel, now part of the Marriott group is a Georgian Mansion dating from 1720 and it is reputedly haunted by the second daughter of the 8th Earl of Morton. The name Dalmahoy refers to the family that held the land from the start of the fourteenth century right up to it passing to the Dalrymples in the mid seventeenth century. The Earls of Morton acquired the property in the 18th century and it is said to be Lady Mary Douglas, daughter of Robert Douglas (died 12 November 1649) and Elizabeth Villiers (1610 – 15 December 1654) that haunts the older parts of the building. An apparition described as a White Lady is said to have been reported in the hotels corridors and bedrooms. Lady Mary Douglas married Sir Donald Macdonald, 10th of Sleat on 24 July 1662 at Perth and in 1684 he was sued as for being unfaithful.
Note: Barbara Villiers the mistress of King Charles II was the niece of Elizabeth Villiers, Countess Morton.
