Phantom Landing Craft
According to Raymond Lamont Brown in his ‘Phantoms Legends, Customs and Superstitions Of The Sea’ (1972), a ghostly 500 ton landing craft was seen off the Devonshire coast in October 1959. The phantom vessel was flying the World War II flag of the Free French and seemed to be in some distress.
Ships were dispatched to aid the vessel, including HMS Acute (Algerine-Class Fleet Minesweeper serving in the Dartmouth Training Squadron), HMS Torquay (Type 12 Whitby-Class frigate) and HMS Turmoil (Bustler-Class salvage tug). Apparently the landing craft just disappeared without a trace and was never seen again.
