Retford Cavalier
An account was recently submitted to Mysterious Britain regarding a Cavalier road ghost near Retford that was recounted in the 1980’s but happened several years previously. The witness was an ambulance driver and was making a lone journey just outside Retford in Nottinghamshire. While driving along a country road he saw a horse and rider heading straight towards him at a gallop. As they neared the ambulance, panic set in as he realised that they were not going to move to the right side of the road. It was at this point he saw the dress of the rider who was wearing a large brimmed hat with a feather or plume and a sword with sash type sword belt. He was dressed as a Cavalier and on his face was a clear Van Dyke beard. They were not transparent and at first glance appeared real and solid in full colour. Just before a collision he swung the horse expertly to one side avoiding the ambulance as he passed the driver’s door window, he tipped his hat. The driver braked heavily and stopped, looking straight away into his rear-view mirror, but he saw nothing. The road was empty for miles back.
The map shows a location in Retford. I am unsure of the exact location of the experience.
