Scotney Castle
The castle is reputedly haunted by a revenue collector that was killed and then had his body thrown into the moat. He supposedly haunts Scotney seeking revenge on Arthur Darrell, once owner of the castle and the poor mans murderer.
Darrell reputedly died abroad in 1720 but legend has it he faked his own funeral. At his graveside a tall man was supposed to have said “That is not me” before leaving. His grave was opened in the 1900’s and the coffin was found to be full of stones.
Scotney Castle dates from around 1378 is believed to have been buit by Roger Ashburnham. It has a slightly rhombus shape to it and was designed as a fortified house.
