St Mary’s Church, Prestbury
The church of St Mary in Prestbury may be as old as the 12th century, though it was largely rebuilt in the 14th century and then went through a period of thorough restoration in the 1860’s. The church is associated with one of Prestbury’s ghosts, the Black Abbot. According to the website for The Royal Oak Inn, ‘The Black Abbot used to walk the aisle of St Mary’s Church until the Church was exorcised, since then he has taken to the Churchyard. There have been sightings of the Abbot in many parts of the village including near The Plough Inn, Mill Street.’
