The Starting Gate, Walsall
A good deal of activity has been reported at the Starting Gate including many newspaper reports of the alleged paranormal happenings here. The ghost haunting the pub is reputed to be that of a previous landlady, Ethel Freeman, who is said to have committed suicide in the cellar sometime around the 1950s. Her white, shimmering figure has been seen flitting across the cellar on a number of occasions and according to a previous landlady who saw her on three occasions was accompanied by the smell of 1960’s perfume.
Loud footsteps have also been heard on the upper floor of the building when there has been no one upstairs at the time. Poltergeist type activity has also been reported here including a glass flying off a shelf in the bar in full view of a previous landlord and curiously on a couple of occasions untidy bedrooms have been mysteriously tidied up. On another occasion the door to the bedroom was found to be blocked by a quilt and a pile of sheets from off the bed. The bed had only just been made.
