Knaresborough
Knaresborough is most famous for its connections with the prophetess Mother Shipton. She is said to have been born in a cave now known as Mother Shipton’s cave, now a popular tourist attraction.
Within walking distance from the cave on the banks of the river Nidd is the dropping well, or petrifying well. A sheet of water that falls over a smooth limestone cliff face. The water from the well collects limestone and gradually turns any items left hanging beneath the well into solid stone. Behind this is a more traditional type of wishing well. The area was once covered by the great forest of Knaresbourough few vestiges of which remain in the present day.
Directions: Knaresborough is reached from the A59 of Junction 47 from the A1M.
