Long Compton
About a mile from the Rollright Stones, it was once it was said that ‘There are enough witches in Long Compton to draw a load of hay up Long Compton Hill.’ Roy Palmer in his ‘The Folklore Of Warwickshire’ gives the following brief account of account of someone contacting the Devil here. ‘A young man sold himself to the devil at Long Compton in the Close, a field with early earthworks near the church. He drew a circle in the centre of the field and read the Lord’s Prayer backwards. When the devil appeared he had twelve imps as familiars and servants. Later, the man again raised the devil at Banbury Fair in the shape of a black cock. His fate has not been recorded.’
