UFO Spotted During Morning TV Broadcast
The following article concerning a UFO being caught on a live BBC broadcast appeared on the Telegraph Newspaper website 7 August 2009.
A UFO was captured flying across the screen during a morning news broadcast in Newcastle. In the footage the speeding projectile appears from the lower left hand side of the screen and seems to pass under the wide arch of Newcastle’s Millennium Bridge.
A webcam filming an area of the River Tyne recorded a streak of white light shooting upwards at a forty-five degree angle travelling at considerable speed.
In the footage the speeding projectile appears from the lower left hand side of the screen and seems to pass under the wide arch of Newcastle’s Millennium Bridge before disappearing out of the top of the screen.
The clip, which has since been uploaded onto video sharing website YouTube, is eliciting theories ranging from model aeroplanes to potential swamp gas.
The webcam was filming an section of the River Tyne which also includes the Sage music venue, Gateshead, and Tyne Bridge.
Nick Pope, a former Ministry of Defence UFO investigator, said: “At first I thought it was a bird, but the slowed down footage seems to rule this out. It’s an intriguing film and a genuine mystery.”
In a later broadcast, Mr Briggs said: “A question worthy of Crimewatch. Were you watching a TV around five past nine yesterday morning? Did you see the breakfast headlines and did you spot something suspicious in the screen behind me? Have a look. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? What is it? We don’t know, perhaps you can help. If so do let us know, and remember, don’t have nightmares.”
Re: UFO Spotted During Morning TV Broadcast
Despite Mr Pope’s assurances I strongly suspect a bird is the culprit.

If you look at the bit at the end where they show the object magnified, it clearly has undulating ‘appendages’. These are typical of flying rods which are caused by insects. The white colour is also typical of flying rods (but not of any small bird in the UK). Birds do not flap fast enough to produce these undulating rod effects. It’s an insect!
Re: UFO Spotted During Morning TV Broadcast
Wouldn’t that be to big for a insect, or is it a lot closer to the camera that it looks?
Re: UFO Spotted During Morning TV Broadcast
You can produce rods with insects anywhere from a few cm distant to several metres away, in the right lighting conditions (back lighting is best). The apparent size of the ‘rod’ is produced by the full wingspan of the insect. It is the motion of the wings that produces the rod’s ‘appendages’. Garden bumblebees, as an example, have a wingspan of up to 4cm.
Re: UFO Spotted During Morning TV Broadcast
I have to agree that an insect does seem to be the most likely of explanations.
Re: UFO Spotted During Morning TV Broadcast
Though I have no problem with the insect explanation I do not see it undulating but my eyes aren’t what they used to be…

I didn’t see the undulation at first. It’s in the final slowed down, magnified shot, at the point where the rod passes over darker areas. Keep trying, it’s there!
